Triggers to Avoid with Renal Cancer
Renal cell carcinoma affects tiny tubes found in the linings of the kidney. Nine out of ten people diagnosed with kidney cancer have Renal Cell Carcinoma (RCC). There is no specific cause for such a high number of cases, but a few factors have been identified as high-risk factors.
The risk factors of renal cancer:
Anyone can be affected by renal cancer but people who are above 50 years old are more likely to get affected by it. Renal cancer in children is quite rare. On the other hand, men are twice as more likely to be at risk. Studies show that tall men also have a higher chance of getting affected by this condition.
Smoking
Smoking is a major risk factor for many health conditions, particularly cancer. It has been noticed that people who have been smoking for a long time are at a higher risk of RCC.
Heredity and family
If you are already affected by any inherited diseases, you could be at additional risk of being affected by renal cancer. If any of your relatives are diagnosed with this condition, it increases your chances as well.
Medication
A few medicines, particularly painkillers and medication used to treat conditions like blood pressure, could lead to renal cancer. People who buy over-the-counter medicines are at higher risk.
Arsenic poisoning
People who drink water that is contaminated with arsenic are also at higher risk for renal or kidney cancer.
Diet and renal cell carcinoma
There has been no direct proof of the connection that a person’s diet or eating habits contribute to cancer. However, certain food habits can directly contribute to the risk factors.
For example, obesity is a high-risk factor and one of the most common causes of obesity is eating unhealthy. Hypertension also could be caused by high-salt and a high-fat diet. Changing one’s dietary patterns can reduce the risk of hypertension and reduce the risk of kidney cancer.
Foods to avoid when suffering from renal cancer
The following food groups should be avoided when diagnosed with renal cancer.
Oxalate food
A compound found in foods and vegetables can lead to stones. These stones then block and obstruct the treatment of renal cancer treatment. Oxalate compound is found in dark leafy vegetables, beetroot, rhubarb, tofu, and nuts.
Animal protein
Accumulation of uric acid found in meat can lead to renal cancer. Avoid dairy products, eggs, and meat.
High potassium food
Food rich in potassium can lead to muscle weakness and cardiovascular issues, which can complicate renal cancer. Potassium-rich foods include avocados, chocolate, granola, dates, figs, bran, squash, apricots, peanut butter, honeydew, broccoli, molasses, milk, and bananas.
Phosphorus foods
People with renal cancer should avoid foods high in phosphorus as the kidney may not be able to excrete the excess phosphorus. This, in turn, could lead to joint pain. Phosphorus is found in food items like liver, beans, chocolate, yogurt, milk, and cheese.
